Strategic Purpose Statement

The purpose of the New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (Level 3) with strands in Landscape construction and Nursery production is to provide the horticulture sector with individuals who have the skills and knowledge to assist with a range of core tasks relevant to a horticulture industry sector. This qualification is ideal for people who may have some general experience, or have a desire to work, in the horticulture industry who want to develop their skills and knowledge. Graduates will be capable of working under limited supervision with responsibility for work outcomes. They will capable of working as a team and carry out routine tasks associated with the implementation of a landscape design or carry out routine nursery production tasks.

Graduate Profile

Graduates will be capable of working under limited supervision with responsibility for work outcome. Be capable of working as a team and carry out routine tasks associated with the implementation of a landscape design or carry out routine nursery production tasks. Graduates of this qualification will have knowledge and skills related to;

  • Horticulture teamwork
  • Landscape planting and history and traditions
  • Agrichemicals and weed control
  • Install drainage systems used in landscaping
  • Install an irrigation system
  • Fertilise a horticulture area
  • Hard landscape
  • Propagate from seed
  • Propagate by cuttings and division
  • Grow nursery crops
  • Irrigation and soil less growing media

Education Pathways

This qualification is not a prerequisite for higher level New Zealand Certificates in Horticulture, however the higher level certificates do build on the skills and knowledge recognised in this qualification.
This qualification may lead on to the
New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture

Production (Level 4) with strands in Fruit Production, Indoor production, Outdoor Vegetable Production, Nursery Production, Post-Harvest or the New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture Services (Level 4) with strands in Amenity, Arboriculture, Cemetery, Landscape Design, Landscape Construction, and Sports Turf.

Employment Pathway

Graduates of this qualification are likely to be employed as Amenity gardener, Arboriculture grounds person, Cemetery grounds person, Landscape labourer, Sports turf labourer, Fruit production worker, Indoor and Outdoor Production worker, Nursery Production worker and Post-Harvest worker.

Entry Criteria

Open entry with an interest in horticulture. Students must enjoy working in an outdoor environment and have the physical capability to cope with the practical demands of the qualification - able to work with shovels, wheelbarrows, lifting and similar.
